The Sausage Capital of Texas
The Texas Legislature proclaimed Elgin the Sausage Capital of Texas in 1995, and the town’s producers turn out millions of pounds of hot sausage a year. It is also the Brick Capital of the Southwest, with three operating brickyards in the mid-20th century, two of which are still open. Both identities show up at parties and reunions, and a barbecue-and-sausage backyard gathering is right in the wheelhouse of a Bit More Bass rig.
Western Days
Western Days is Elgin’s annual homecoming, held the fourth weekend of June, with pageants, a carnival, a tennis court dance, a Grand Parade down Main Street and the Festival in the Park. It’s the biggest date on the calendar. Private parties that weekend should plan around the parade route.
The Hogeye Festival
The Hogeye Festival celebrates the town, Elgin sausage and all things swine each October. Cook teams and small groups often want a portable PA for their booth or campsite; Getting Bumping covers that.
Elgin Christmas
Elgin celebrates the holidays starting the last Saturday in November, with Shop Small Saturday and activities every Saturday in December, including Santa’s reindeer games, carols and a hot cocoa stroll. Holiday parties for businesses near Main Street work with a low, clear system.
The historic downtown
Elgin’s Commercial Historic District, City Hall in the historic Dr. I. B. Nofsinger House and a Texas Farm mural in the post office by Julius Woeltz give the center a lot of character. The 1872 Houston and Texas Central Railroad building houses the Chamber of Commerce. Events among old buildings want modest levels, and we keep speakers pointed away from storefronts.
After the 2022 tornado
An EF2 tornado damaged the eastern side of Elgin on March 21, 2022. Fundraisers and community gatherings since then are typical small events, a portable PA with a couple of wireless mics.
