Hutto is a Williamson County city about 22 miles northeast of Austin and seven miles east of Round Rock. The 2020 census counted 27,577 people, and a 2025 estimate put it near 46,000, a growth rate that few Central Texas towns can match.
The town was established in 1855 when the International-Great Northern Railroad crossed land owned by John Hutto, and its best-known local story is about a hippo.

The Hippo
Hutto’s mascot is a hippo, from a 1915 local legend about a circus-train hippo that escaped near Cottonwood Creek. The city marks World Hippo Day every February 15 at City Hall, and the Hippo Trail Fest brings trail races to town each March. There’s also a Hippo Boos Fest in late October. Hutto is served by Hutto ISD, and the Eastern Williamson County Higher Education Center is a partnership among Temple College, Texas A&M University–Central Texas and Texas State Technical College. Graduations, banquets and dances at school sites follow district rules, so confirm what outside equipment is allowed.
