Lockhart is the county seat of Caldwell County, about 30 miles south of Austin on US Highway 183, 70 miles northeast of San Antonio. The 2020 census counted 14,379 people. In 1999 the Texas Legislature designated it the Barbecue Capital of Texas.

The Chisholm Trail Roundup
The Chisholm Trail Roundup has run in Lockhart City Park in the second week of June since 1972, with a full rodeo, a parade of more than 150 entries, gunfight reenactments, cowboy breakfasts, live music and a barbecue and chili cook-off. It is the town’s largest event. If you are hosting a reunion or a team party, book early; that weekend fills the town.

Lockhart has four major barbecue restaurants, and Kreuz Market has been operating since 1900. It’s a restaurant rather than an event venue. Backyard barbecue parties and cook-off teams are a natural fit for a Bit More Bass rig, aimed away from the neighbors’ windows.
Courthouse Nights and the square
Courthouse Nights is a free music series on the Caldwell County Courthouse lawn from 7 to 10 p.m. A Christmas to Remember in Lockhart brings a lighted parade to the square. Both are community-run; private events near the square plan around them.
The oldest library in Texas
The Dr. Eugene Clark Library, completed around 1899, is the oldest operating public library in Texas. Small ceremonies and readings in historic buildings need a compact, low-level PA.
Historic Lockhart
The Caldwell County Courthouse, Emmanuel Episcopal Church (1856) and the Southwest Museum of Clocks and Watches are among the landmarks. The town was originally named Plum Creek and was the site of the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840. It was incorporated in 1852.
Lockhart State Park
Lockhart State Park offers camping, fishing, hiking and the only staff-operated nine-hole golf course in the Texas State Park System, and it hosts events like a Spring Festival & Native Plant Sale. State park events follow park rules on amplified sound.
